Őrség (literally: ‘Outpost’) is a historical and ethnographic region; at present, most of its area belongs to West Hungary, while a small part (the so-called Mura region) is in Slovenia. This region abounds in pleasant sights, natural beauties, historic remnants of the past, cultural and spiritual values.

It is at the South-Western edge of county Vas, where sentries were settled by the first ‘Magyar’ tribes conquering the present area of Hungary. Their task was to defend the western ‘gates’ of the land, to watch the border from high places. Their work was reimbursed with various privileges: they were servants of none except for the king. This is why this area is still called Őrség i.e. ‘Outpost’.
